(We do not test earlier than kindergarten)
Private practice for testing in
Broward since 1980
PLEASE READ THIS PAGE SO YOU CAN MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION REGARDING PRIVATE TESTING
A child can be tested through the public and charter schools. The advantage----it is free. Private testing may offer a minimal waiting time compared to the schools. Private testing doesn't become part of your child's school records unless YOU decide to present it to the school.
Private testing MUST be done by a licensed psychologist or licensed school psychologist (in Florida).
The testing involves the administration of an IQ test, a written and oral report to the parent, and is approximately a 1 1/2 to 2 hour appointment, including testing and meeting with the parent. A written report, which is included in the fee, is prepared after. The report written will be sent to you, although the results will be discussed in person the day of the testing.
Our current fee is $400*.
(Wechsler IQ Testing and Written Report)
*If the child has had the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-5 within the last 12 months, we can administer the Stanford-Binet 5 as an alternative. However, the fee for The Stanford-Binet is $450.
Although schools, at their discretion, may consider a private report in the determination of gifted eligibility, other factors, in addition to IQ, are involved as well in schools' decisions (e.g. classroom achievement, demonstration in school of learning and behavioral characteristics consistent with "giftedness"-----often based on the teacher's responses to a standardized rating scale).
In most cases, a child's IQ must equal or exceed 98% of his/her age peers (130 IQ or higher). There are some infrequent exceptions to this score based on socioeconomic factors, such as a child who receives free or reduced lunch or is in a Limited English Proficient program.
If the child has been tested in the last 12 months, you must notify us in advance. The SAME IQ test can't be used for a year. The schools will reject it. An acceptable test other than the one previously used must be administered.
The schools have the right to
re-test the child. Re-testing by the schools is quite infrequent, but could occur.
For any questions about private testing, speak with you school's ESE specialist or administrator. When a school accepts a private report, there is a procedure that follows at school for the determination of program eligibility, as noted above. In most cases, a child is not instantly placed in a "gifted" class.
Private testing DOES NOT increase the chances the child will test "gifted."
The child has to earn the required score, the same as if he/she were tested at school. We follow the same standardized administration procedures as the school would.
For questions regarding in-school procedures in handling outside private testing, speak with your school's ESE specialist, counselor, or administrator.
